California suspends 3 medical providers for fraud

The California Division of Workers Compensation said Thursday that it has suspended three more medical providers from participating in the state’s workers comp system.

George Parisotto, the division’s acting administrative director, issued orders of suspension against Tustin, California-based Samuel H. Albert, a psychiatrist who pled guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in 2016 to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

San Diego-based physician Barry Julian Broomberg pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California in 2013 to visa fraud, and San Diego-based psychologist Robert E. Brizendine surrendered his psychologist’s license to the California Board of Psychology in 2014, the division said in the statement.

This brings the total number of providers suspended this year to 49, according to the statement.

Under A.B. 1244, passed in 2016, medical providers are banned from participating in California’s workers comp system if they have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving fraud, abuse of the Medi-Cal or Medicare programs, or abuse of the workers comp system.
