Brazilian retailer invests in security, logistics amid surge in cargo theft

Marcelo Lopes, head of logistics at Brazil-based retailer Via Varejo S.A., said that the firm has invested in security, drawn no-go zones for deliveries and beefed up in-store pickup services following a surge in cargo theft, Reuters reported. The firm has started using its own trucks to stock 80 stores in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Lopes said. Data from Brazil's state public safety department showed that cargo theft grew nearly 26% year over year in Rio and 20% in Sao Paulo in the first seven months of the year.
