Chicken farmers take nearly $40 million hit from contaminated eggs

Netherlands-based Wageningen University said that Dutch chicken farmers have suffered about $39 million worth of damage due to culls and recalls after their eggs were found to be tainted with a toxic chemical, Reuters reported. In early August, investigators had detected fipronil, a flea poison, in slightly higher than acceptable levels on Dutch chicken farms, leading to culls, quarantines and other measures to prevent further production of contaminated eggs.
