Wildfires blacken 140,000 hectares of forest in Portugal

The European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said that wildfires burnt around 140,000 hectares of woodland in Portugal up to Aug. 5, accounting for more than one-third of the burnt forest in the EU, The Telegraph reported. The area of blackened forest in Portugal is about five times larger than the average recorded in the country between 2008 and 2016, the agency said. Around 80% of the country is experiencing extreme drought conditions this year.
