Five funny travel insurance claims that got the OK

A young British traveler marveling at the sights in Athens, Greece, was distracted by a group of women in bikinis and walked into a bus shelter, breaking his nose.

And his travel insurance company paid his hospital bill, according to the Telegraph newspaper’s lineup of five quirky travel insurance claims that were paid.

Others that made the list in late July:

  • Two children enjoying a beach getaway with their parents in Cornwall, England, buried the family video camera in the sand so it wouldn’t be stolen while they went swimming. Later, they could not remember where they buried it — and their insurer paid for the camera.
  • A couple on vacation in Malaysia returned to their hotel to find that monkeys had allegedly stolen their clothes and scattered them across the neighboring rainforest. New clothes, courtesy of their travel insurer.
  • A vacationer in Sri Lanka needed hospital treatment after a coconut fell on her head while she was reading in the shade below; bills paid by insurer.
  • A bride's dream Caribbean wedding when up in flames when her dress caught fire on the barbecue. Her fast-thinking new husband picked her up and threw her into the ocean. Their insurer compensated them for their ruined wedding attire.
