RBS to pay $5.5 billion to settle US mortgage case

The Royal Bank of Scotland P.L.C. has settled two major U.S. investigations over its activities before the 2008 financial crisis.

The Edinburgh-based bank will pay $5.5 billion to settle allegations by the U.S. government related to its mortgage-backed securities business.

The cases needed to be resolved to allow the British government to sell its shares in RBS.
