Ohio workers comp budget awaits governor’s signature

The new budget for Ohio’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation has been sent to Gov. John Kasich’s desk minus a controversial measure that would have made it legal to not pay workers comp benefits for injured, undocumented workers.

The Senate passed House Bill 27 on Wednesday in a 24 – 9 vote. An earlier version, passed by the Ohio House of Representatives 65 – 29 in May, included the amendment blocking undocumented workers from comp coverage.

The Senate dropped the amendment earlier in June. Opponents at the time said the amendment would have provided an incentive for fraudulent employers to hire undocumented workers.
