Ryan recruits former Markel med mal underwriting chief

Ryan Specialty Group L.L.C. named Debra Goldberg chief underwriting officer of managing general underwriter Sapphire Blue on Wednesday.

Ms. Goldberg, who is based in Sapphire Blue’s Chicago headquarters, was previously managing director of medical underwriting for Richmond, Virginia-based Markel Corp., according to a Ryan Specialty statement.

Ms. Goldberg will help “enhance and expand Sapphire Blue’s underwriting offerings especially allied healthcare,” the statement said.

In addition to underwriting, Ms. Goldberg held positions as claims attorney and medical claims manager for Markel before joining the professional liability underwriting staff.

A company spokeswoman said this is a new position.
