Climate change likely to cause more natural catastrophes in Latin America: Experts

Experts said that the recent natural catastrophes in Latin American countries such as heavy rains in Peru, mudslides in Colombia and drought in Venezuela have put the spotlight on extreme weather conditions that are likely to be more frequent due to climate change, Xinhua reported. "Latin America has in recent years seen changes in the weather system that was previously controlled, but due to human intervention, phenomena such as El Nino and La Nina are increasingly affecting countries closest to the Pacific region," said Carlos Dario Ramirez, biologist at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research.
