BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Fall hazards land roofing contractor on severe safety violator list

An Illinois roofing contractor is facing $214,782 in proposed penalties and has been deemed a severe violator of federal workplace safety rules for exposing employees to fall hazards.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued four willful and two serious safety violations to Belleville, Illinois-based Robert Barringer III, which operates as Barringer Brothers Roofing, after OSHA inspectors saw roofers working at heights greater than 6 feet without adequate fall protection in July 2016, the agency said Wednesday in a statement.

Barringer has a history of violations, with the agency previously citing Robert Barringer III doing business under different variations of the name Barringer Brothers, according to OSHA. Because of this citation history, Barringer was also placed in the agency’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program, which focuses resources on inspecting employers who, according to the agency, have demonstrated indifference to their Occupational Safety and Health Act obligations through willful, repeated or failure-to-abate violations.

“Robert Barringer exposed employees to fall hazards and failed to comply with federal safety requirements to protect workers on the job putting them at serious risk of injury or worse,” Aaron Priddy, OSHA’s area director in Fairview Heights, Illinois, said in the statement. “Fall protection is required whenever employees work at heights greater than 6 feet.”

A company spokesperson could not be reached through calls to multiple business entities using the Barringer name.
