David Lopez, whose last day as general counsel at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was Friday, will join plaintiff law firm Outten & Golden L.L.P. in January.

Mr. Lopez, who announced his plans to leave the EEOC in October, will join the firm as a partner and head the firm’s new Washington office, Outten & Golden said Monday in a statement. His practice will focus primarily on individual and class action anti-discrimination litigation as well as consent decree monitoring and mediation, the law firm said in its announcement.

Mr. Lopez, who joined the EEOC in 2010, was its longest-serving general counsel. He led the commission’s litigation program at the EEOC, overseeing the agency’s 15 regional attorneys and a staff of more than 325 lawyers and legal professionals, according to the law firm.

“David’s trial program at the EEOC was extremely successful, and his knowledge of federal anti-discrimination law is unrivaled,” Wayne N. Outten, New York-based founder and managing partner at the law firm, said in the statement. “As the largest firm in the nation that focuses exclusively on representing employees, we are pleased that our clients will have another elite lawyer and a litigator with unique professional experience.”
