San Francisco hikes employer health care fee for 2017

Employers with workers in San Francisco will have to pay more next year to comply with the city's health care spending law.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, employers with 100 or more employees in San Francisco will pay $2.64 per hour per covered employee on health care, up from $2.53 in 2016, city officials disclosed Tuesday.

Employers with between 20 and 99 employees will have to spend $1.76 per hour, up from $1.68. Employers with fewer than 20 employees are exempt from the requirement.

The spending requirement can be satisfied in various ways, including payment of employees' health insurance premiums and contributions to a city fund.

It applies to employees who work at least eight hours per week and who have been employed for more than 90 days.
