Zhang Jiatuan, an official at China's Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said that widespread flooding across the nation's 28 provinces has caused direct economic losses of 147 billion Chinese yuan ($22 billion), reported Xinhua.
Floods in more than 1,508 counties have claimed 237 lives and destroyed about 147,200 houses, said Mr. Jiatuan. He added that the situation is "still quite critical" as China's central and eastern parts are expected to see a fresh round of heavy rain in the coming days.
