Car insurer likes teen driver's chutzpah

This is definitely worth a thumb's up: A U.K. teenager put his social media savvy to good use by challenging a car insurance company to pay the £300 deposit ($410) he needed as part of his quote if he could get a certain number of likes on Facebook.

Being a broke student, Alex Williams was looking for ways to save money on his car insurance and thought he'd try his luck by sending Autosaint a message asking them to pay the deposit if he could reach a number of likes of the insurer's choosing. Autosaint took the bait and agreed to pay the deposit if Mr. Williams could get 5,000 likes — a total he nearly doubled by the time his 24 hours were up.

“Alex mailed us, the message made us laugh, we found it quite cheeky,” a spokesman said. “We asked the management team what they thought of it, and it made them laugh too so we thought would run with it. We know how expensive insurance can be for young people, so we do anything we can to help them.”

The company also loved that he didn't just hit the target, but smashed it and held up its end of the bargain by giving him the deposit, according to the spokesman.

Mr. Williams quickly thanked all his old and new friends on Facebook for helping him reach the likes target and save some cash.

Wonder if his next challenge will involve an Instagram of the car, affordable insurance included.
