House GOP to release plan for health care reform repeal

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives next week will unveil their plan to replace the 2010 health care reform law.

“Next week, we will release a plan to not just repeal, but also replace Obamacare,” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday at a news conference, referring to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The proposal will be released Wednesday at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington-based conservative think tank.

The proposal, observers say, is more for discussion purposes rather than the start of a new GOP drive — during the remaining weeks of the congressional session — to repeal the ACA.

Indeed, Rep. Ryan said, following President Barack Obama's successful veto earlier this year of a Republican-backed measure that would have repealed key parts of the health reform law, such as the employer mandate, that the GOP would wait until 2017 to resume a repeal drive.

“So what we are proving today is if we have a Republican president next year, we will repeal Obamacare,” Rep. Ryan said after the veto.

Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential candidate, backs ACA repeal.
