The following story has been corrected to reflect the correct workers compensation policyholder.

The workers compensation insurer for a contractor with Inland Regional Center has filed a tort claim against San Bernardino County, California, related to the killing of a man during the Dec. 2 mass shooting by a married couple.

Seeking damages of $53,439, California's State Compensation Insurance Fund on May 20 filed a tort claim “to reserve our right to explore the county's liability” in a workers comp claim filed after the death of an employee of Pathway Inc., a contractor that ran a coffee shop at the center, a spokeswoman for California's insurer of last resort said Thursday.

She noted that $53,439 is an estimate of the total cost of the workers comp claim at the time.

Fourteen people were killed and 22 were injured in the Dec. 2 terrorist attack at Inland Regional Center, where a married couple targeted a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health holiday party.
