The bulker New Mykonos, which ran aground off Madagascar's Faux Cap in early 2016, has broken in two and partially sunk, reports The Maritime Executive citing local news.

Only a portion of the bulker's wheelhouse, stack and stern is above the surface.

New Mykonos was carrying 160,000 tons of coal when it ran aground.

Salvage operations started in March but the refloat attempt was halted due to the deterioration of the bulker's condition and hull damage.

The nation's government is reportedly asking the vessel's owner and insurer to pay for the removal of the cargo.
