Transgender bathroom access denial called a civil rights violation

Denying transgender individuals bathrooms that align with their gender identity is a violation of federal civil rights law, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says.

“Denying an employee equal access to a common restroom corresponding to the employees' gender identity is sex discrimination” under Title VII, reads “Fact Sheet: Bathroom Access Rights for Transgender Employees under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” The fact sheet, posted Monday, cites two court cases.

The EEOC has filed several lawsuits in which it has charged that discrimination against transgender individuals is a violation of federal law.
