Pirate attacks fall, but violent attacks on the rise in West Africa

The International Maritime Bureau has said that while the number of pirate attacks continued to decrease globally in the first quarter of 2016, violence against vessels in West Africa is on the rise, reported Seatrade Maritime.

IMB said in a report that its Piracy Reporting Centre reported 37 incidents of piracy and armed robbery incidents during the quarter compared to 54 in the same period in 2015. IMB said that 44 seafarers were either kidnapped or held hostage in the Gulf of Guinea.
