Piracy surge could make Indonesia a new SomaliaPosted On: Apr. 22, 2016 12:00 AM CST
Officials have said that an increase in piracy along Indonesia's sea border with the Philippines could make Indonesia the new Somalia, reports Reuters.
Officials have asked vessels to avoid danger areas in light of the increasing piracy incidents. Up to 18 Malaysians and Indonesians have been kidnapped in three recent attacks on tugboats in Philippine waters. Coal trade in Indonesia has also been disrupted due to concerns over maritime attacks by suspected Islamist militants. At least two Indonesian coal ports have suspended shipments to the Philippines.
