Insurer Aegon records lower-than-expected earnings in fourth quarter

Dutch insurer Aegon N.V. posted lower-than-expected earnings in the fourth quarter of 2015, reported Reuters.

Aegon's pre-tax profit decreased to €486 million ($540 million) during the quarter, compared with €562 million in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Aegon cited "lower earnings from fixed and variable annuities, and retirement plans in the United States" as factors behind the lower earnings.

The insurer's net income increased 20% to €478 million during the quarter.
