Economic losses from forest fires total $140 million in 2015

Colombia's national planning department has said that forest fires in the nation caused by El Nino have caused economic losses worth 476 billion Colombian pesos ($140 million) in 2015, reported El Colombiano.

The department said that the central and eastern regions of the nation were the worst hit due to the fires. Losses in these regions totaled COP 112.4 million as fires burned 6,498 hectares. Data from the nation's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management showed that there were 4,617 fires in 2015 due to the El Nino phenomenon.
