U.S. elections, emerging economies join terrorism as political risks

In addition to terrorism, the 2016 U.S. elections and struggles in the world’s emerging economies are among the top political risks organizations will face in the coming year, according to a new report from Marsh L.L.C., the company said in a statement Tuesday.

In “Geopolitical Threats for the Year Ahead: Marsh’s Political Risk Map for 2016,” Marsh says, “In the last decade, multinational organizations have undertaken unprecedented international expansion, leaving them exposed to global credit and political risks like never before.”

Terrorism, addressed first by the report, is a growing concern.

“Attacks in 2015 have led to a renewed focus by world powers on combating terrorism,” says the Marsh report.

The upcoming U.S. elections are also a complication.

“With polls showing national security to be a major concern for voters, foreign policy will remain a key theme on the campaign trail in 2016 — and will be top of mind for the next presidential administration,” says the Marsh report.

The Marsh report also cites struggling economies in China and Russia as additional complications though it points to India as “a bright spot among emerging economies.”
