France halts some poultry farming due to bird flu

The French agriculture ministry has asked poultry farmers in southwest France to stop producing ducks and geese as part of efforts to eradicate bird flu, reported France 24 citing news agencies.

The H5N1 virus strain has been detected on 69 farms in southwest France since November 2015.

Foie gras makers said that the freezing of output for several months is expected to cost the industry between €250 million ($272 million) and €300 million.
