"Data is the new oil," yet Australia still has a "head-in-the-sand approach," said Mr. Pogue.
Hackers are becoming more creative and more aggressive, added Mr. Pogue.
Individuals and small firms have self-reported financial loss worth $234 million Australian ($166.7 million) to the new Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network in the first quarter of 2015.
