Drought-related claims likely to total $152.5 million in Odisha, India

Officials have estimated that drought-related claims to be settled under crop insurance in India's Odisha state is likely to hit 10 billion Indian rupees ($152.5 million), reported Business Standard.

The drought has hit crops in 532,000 hectares in the state.

The Odisha government has declared 139 blocks in 21 districts as drought affected.

The National Agricultural Insurance Scheme is being implemented by the Agriculture Insurance Co. of India Ltd.

"Given the prevailing conditions in the state, the claims settled this year may be the largest one in the history of Odisha," an AICL official said.
