Maritime piracy, armed robbery incidents up 25%

A report by piracy watchdog ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre said that 161 maritime piracy and armed robbery incidents has been reported in Asia in the first nine months of 2015, World Maritime News reported.

There has been a 25% year-on-year increase in such incidents, said the report. Of the total, 11 were piracy incidents and 150 were armed robberies against ships. The report said that 110 of the total 161 incidents happened on board ship while underway. Majority of the incidents on board ships while underway happened in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
