Credit card numbers hacked from thrift store chain

An Alabama-based thrift store chain has reported a credit card breach.

In a statement issued last week, Ken Sobaski, CEO of Birmingham, Alabama-based America's Thrift Stores said a data security breach that occurred through software used by a third-party service provider allowed Eastern European criminals unauthorized access to payment card numbers.

Mr. Sobaski said in the statement that according to the U.S. Secret Service, only card numbers and expiration dates were taken. Mr. Sobaski said the breach may have affected sales transactions between Sept. 1, 2015 and Sept. 27, 2015. He said the malware that was the source of the breach has been removed.

America's Thrift Stores is a for-profit firm that supports Christian ministries, with 18 stores in the Southeast, according to its website.
