Farmers urged to insure crops ahead of expected drought

An official at the Philippines' Department of Agriculture said that farmers in the country's Soccsksargen region have been urged to insure their crops with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. ahead of the expected drought due to El Nino, reported BusinessWorld Online.

"Doing this could protect farmers from losses due to El Nino," said the official. Climate models show that El Nino "will likely strengthen further before the end of 2015 and may last until the first half of 2016," the country's state weather service said.
