June flood damage bill hits $174.3 million in New Zealand

The estimated economic impact of floods that hit New Zealand's Whanganui, Manawatu and Taranaki regions in June has been now put at $275 million New Zealand ($174.3 million), reported Radio New Zealand.

The Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council had earlier estimated the damage from the floods at $120 million New Zealand ($76 million).

Nikki Kaye, civil defense minister, said that she was concerned that the floods have badly affected rural areas.

Ms. Kaye said the biggest single cost would be repairing roads and infrastructure in the regions.
