Heffernan Insurance Brokers has launched a cyber insurance program for data security risks for restaurants.

The program provides coverage for claims that are brought against restaurant owners due to data breaches, covering direct costs that occur from responding to a breach even if a claim is never brought, the Walnut Creek, California-based broker said Tuesday in a statement.

Additionally, the coverage offers access to a risk management portal as a source for data security best practices and summaries of data privacy laws by state, according to the statement.

The limit options are $500,000, $1 million and $2 million with annual minimum premiums as low as $975.

“We have seen a dramatic increase of cyber attacks in the restaurant industry, and we are thrilled to offer restaurant owners a way to protect their business from the continual risk of data breaches,” said Amy Vitarelli, Heffernan Insurance Brokers' senior vice president and restaurant and hospitality practice leader.
