Bird flu spreads across West Africa: U.N. food agency

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has said that a highly contagious avian flu virus H5N1 is spreading across West Africa, reported Reuters.

The food agency said that human spillover is feared.

The deadly virus has affected markets and farms in Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Niger, said the FAO.

About 330 million are likely to be hit across West Africa if the virus continues to spread.

The FAO said that 1.6 million birds have been culled or killed by the virus since 2014 in Nigeria.
