Global wildfire season lengthened by nearly 20% in 35 years: Study

A recent climate change study has found that global wildfire season has lengthened by nearly 20% in 35 years due to a rise in temperature, reported InterAksyon citing Agence France-Presse.

"Fire weather seasons have lengthened across 29.6 million square kilometers (11.4 million square miles) of the Earth's vegetated surface," the study said. The report said that around 350 million hectares are burned each year. Wildfires cost Canada around $1 billion each year over the last decade. In 2005, wildfire costs in Australia were pegged at almost $9.4 billion, added the report.
