United Nations and Somali fishing officials have warned that an increase in illegal fishing off Somalia is likely to revive piracy in the region, reported Hellenic Shipping News citing Reuters.

The last outbreak of Somali piracy in 2012 cost the global shipping industry billions of dollars. Several Chinese, South Korean and Iranian vessels have been fishing illegally in Somali waters, said a Somali official. Criminal gangs and pirates might use the rise in illegal fishing as a pretext to hijack other vessels, said an official.
