Food industry point-of-sale vendor hacked

A point-of-sale technology vendor that specializes in the food industry may have had a data security breach, says the company's president.

Thomas Woycik, president of Troy, Michigan-based Nextep Systems Inc., said in a statement Tuesday that the security of the point-of-sale systems at some of its customer locations may have been compromised.

Mr. Woycik said the company has launched an investigation in cooperation with law enforcement and data security experts to determine the root cause and remediate the issue.

He said the problem is not affecting all of Nextep's customers, and that the company has been working with them to ensure any issues are addressed.

“At this stage, we are not certain of the extent of the breach and are working to ensure a complete resolution,” Mr. Woycik said in the statement.

Eric Ersher, founder and CEO of Southfield, Michigan-based Zoup! Fresh Soup Co. L.L.C., said his firm has been impacted by the incident, although the total number of stores has not yet been determined. “The malware was detected and eliminated,” he said. The company operates more than 75 restaurants in the United States and Canada. The breach was originally reported by security blogger Brian Krebs.
