Turkey: More than half of construction projects halted after inspections

An official from Turkey's social security ministry has said that authorities have closed down about 974 construction projects out of a total 1,800 after inspections, which follow recent fatal accidents, Hurriyet Daily News reports.

The construction halt includes 408 sites in Ankara, 131 in Izmir and 278 in Istanbul, the official said, adding that "disobedience of the rules" is common in the sector. Officials have been blamed for improper monitoring at the sites.
