Nigeria: Shell ordered to pay $11 billion for 2011 Bonga oil spill
Posted On: Jan. 31, 2014 12:00 AM CSTRoyal Dutch Shell P.L.C. has been ordered to pay 1.84 trillion Nigerian naira ($11.3 billion) in fines and compensation for the 2011 Bonga oil spill in Nigeria, the Daily Times of Nigeria reported.
This includes around NGN 1.04 trillion as compensation for the communities affected by the spill and around NGN 800 billion for the incident itself, the newspaper reported. The order was issued by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the National Oil Spill Response and Emergency Agency.
