Kudos to David North for discussing a need to meet the growing ethnic and diversity differences of employees across the country with workers compensation claims professionals who can navigate cultural variations.
And thanks to Bob Wilson for writing about Dave’s discussion on the topic. Dave is president and CEO at Sedgwick Claims Management Services Inc. and I think he has it right.
I was a newspaper reporter in Southern California during the 1980s and 1990s when publishing companies recognized that the region’s exploding Latino population required hiring more Spanish speakers.
For me, that led to improved job opportunities and increased my workday fun when competing reporters were unable to communicate with street sources I easily scored quotes from.
It was also a significant competitive edge for the newspapers I worked for in a very media competitive region. And it wasn’t just a language advantage. Cultural respect and sources’ preference for someone from a similar background eased my access into people’s homes and street-corner conversations.
So I grasp that it will be much easier for an injured worker, dealing with a complicated work comp system, to share information with someone in tune with them.
And in this day of predictive modeling, communicating with claimants and effectively gleaning information about them is even more crucial. So Sedgwick competitors might want to pick up on this idea.
I’ve heard Dave discuss this subject before Bob raised it in one of his well-written columns. But Bob beat me to writing about it so you can see his post titled “The Ethnic Factor in Workers’ Comp” here.
