Canada: Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway unsure about sufficient insurance cover

Ed Burkhardt, CEO of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Ltd., said he cannot predict if his company's insurance cover is enough to cover deaths and damages caused by the derailment of a runaway MMA train in Lac-Mégantic, The Montreal Gazette reported.

The Canadian Transportation Agency's communications director, Jacqueline Bannister, acknowledged that MMA had previously provided its insurance certificate, but said that when a major change disrupts a railway's operations, it may mean "their liability insurance coverage is no longer adequate." Transportation pundit David McGuinty said that besides the cleanup and rebuilding costs, a number of other costs could emerge.
