BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Sheila Small, former assistant treasurer of risk management at Verizon Communications Inc., has been named executive director of the New Jersey Captive Insurance Association, effective July 1.

Ms. Small, who retired from Verizon in December, was deeply involved in that company’s captive insurance program.

“Captives have always been my specialty and were something we worked very hard on at Verizon,” she said.

Her new position with the NJCIA “was just a natural transition,” Ms. Small said. “I have a lot of contacts in the industry, and I like to work on things that are still in the early stages.”

She cited organizations such as the Vermont Captive Insurance Association, the Delaware Captive Insurance Association and the Connecticut Captive Insurance Association as being among those she sees as models for the New Jersey group.

“We’re looking to grow the (NJCIA), get a lot of support in the industry and make it meaningful,” Ms. Small said. “We want to provide education. We want to provide networking.”

She said she sees growth opportunities for the New Jersey domicile.

“There are a lot of New Jersey companies that don’t have captives,” Ms. Small said. “A lot of pharmaceutical companies don’t have captives. I think captives are growing in the middle market also.”

Ms. Small was Business Insurance’s 2003 Risk Manager of the Year® and was named one of Business Insurance’s Women to Watch in 2008.
