OFF BEAT: Jim Carrey sued for not providing workers comp insurance

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey reportedly stands accused of being a workers compensation scofflaw for allegedly failing to purchase insurance for employees at his New York art studio.

The New York State Workers’ Compensation Board fined him $72,000 for failing to purchase workers comp coverage for all of 2012, according to published reports. But the fine has not been paid, so the workers comp board has gone to court to collect, reports said.

A representative for Mr. Carrey told reporters the issue is merely a clerical error that will get straightened out quickly, with the actor denying any wrongdoing.

The error, or failure to purchase workers comp insurance, stems from Mr. Carrey’s opening of his art studio, Church of FFC, in 2011. Like most other states, New York requires employers to purchase workers comp insurance, self-insure their workplace injury risks or pay fines.
