Workers comp pharmacy biller to restore $1M in overcharges to Massachusetts

A workers compensation pharmacy billing company agreed to pay $1 million in restitution to settle allegations it overcharged Massachusetts and nearly 80 municipalities within the state, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Thursday.

StoneRiver Pharmacy Solutions Inc. also will make a separate payment of more than $500,000 to Massachusetts for alleged violations of the state’s False Claims Act, the attorney general announced.

StoneRiver charges cities and towns for workers comp insurance pharmacy fills on behalf of pharmacy retail stores, the attorney general said.

“Overcharging for prescription drugs harms cities and towns at a time when they are facing great financial pressure to provide much-needed services to people,” Ms. Coakley said in a statement. “This case will provide restitution to those communities, and we are determined to prevent overcharges like these from happening in the future.”
