Repeal and replace health care reform law: Romney

The 2010 health care reform law must be repealed, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

“We must rein in the skyrocketing cost of health care by repealing and replacing Obamacare,” Mr. Romney said. Obamacare is a term critics frequently use in referring to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Romney also told Republican delegates that cuts to Medicare contained in the health care reform law “will both hurt today's senior and depress innovation and jobs in medicine.”

As Massachusetts' governor, Mr. Romney signed legislation in 2006 from which the 2010 federal law borrowed such features as establishing insurance exchanges and providing premium subsidies for the lower-income uninsured.

However, Mr. Romney vetoed a provision, which state lawmakers later overrode, that requires employers with at least 11 employees to offer coverage or pay a $295 per employee penalty.
