CHICAGO—The estate of former Chicago Sun-Times owner James Tyree has reached a $10 million settlement with the University Chicago Medical Center over his March 2011 death, according to a report.

The Chicago Tribune reported Monday that Mr. Tyree’s death was allegedly partly because of a medical error.

Court records also mention an additional “gift agreement,” although details could not immediately be learned, according to the Tribune.

Mr. Tyree, who also was chief executive of Chicago-based Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc., had been seriously ill with stomach cancer, but the Cook County medical examiner ruled his death an accident that was due to the improper removal of a catheter during a routine procedure at the center, according to the Tribune.

Spokesmen for the medical center and the estate’s attorney could not be reached for comment.
