NEW YORK—Ikuo Uno, former chairman of Nippon Life Insurance Co., is this year’s Insurance Hall of Fame winner, the International Insurance Society announced Tuesday.

The Insurance Hall of Fame recognizes industry leaders “who have made a broad, encompassing and lasting contribution to the insurance industry and who are recognized by their peers as successful leaders, innovators and visionaries,” the New York-based IIS said in a statement announcing its choice. The IIS honors committee, which consists of senior insurance executives and academics, selects nominees who are voted on by IIS members.

“Mr. Uno stands out among his peers as a true leader and visionary, not just in Japan but on a global level, and I cannot think of anyone in the business who is more deserving of this prestigious award.” said Bernhard Fink, chairman of the IIS honors committee, in a statement.

“Mr. Uno has led Nippon Life through tumultuous times with a steadfast adherence to sound business principles,” said IIS President and CEO Michael J. Morrissey in the statement,

Mr. Uno will be inducted into the Insurance Hall of Fame at the IIS’ annual seminar in Rio de Janeiro on June 18.
