Mercer taps Chartis exec Julio Portalatin as president and CEO

NEW YORK—Julio A. Portalatin, a veteran senior executive at American International Group Inc. and various AIG units, has been named president and CEO of Mercer L.L.C., Mercer parent company Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. announced Tuesday.

Mr. Portalatin, 52, is an AIG senior vp and president and CEO of AIG unit Chartis Growth Economies, with responsibility for operations in the Asia/Pacific, South Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Central Europe regions.

He will remain at Chartis until Jan. 20, an AIG spokesman said. He takes the post at Mercer effective Feb. 1, MMC said.

“Julio will play an instrumental role in helping Marsh & McLennan Cos. strengthen and grow its world-leading consulting operations,” MMC CEO and President Brian Duperreault said in a statement.

Since joining AIG in 1993, Mr. Portalatin has held other leadership positions, including president of American International Underwriters' worldwide accident and health division, and president and CEO of Chartis Europe S.A.

Previously, he spent 12 years in various positions with Allstate Insurance Co.

Mr. Portalatin, who will be based in New York, will report to MMC President and Chief Operating Officer Dan Glaser.

Mr. Portalatin succeeds M. Michele Burns, who resigned in October.
