JOPLIN, Mo.—To view the battered husk of St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., is to know the terrifying and destructive power of the EF-5 tornado that struck the city on May 22.

Winds of more than 200 mph tore off the hospital’s roof, shattered nearly all of its windows and badly damaged much of the building’s interior. Five patients and one visitor to the hospital were among the 123 people in Joplin killed during the storm.

Images of the devastation can be seen here.
