A massive tornado struck the southern Missouri city of Joplin Sunday, killing dozens and causing widespread property destruction.

At least 89 people were killed and 2,000 structures are estimated to have been destroyed after the storm cut a path six miles long and one-half to three-quarters of a mile wide through the town of about 50,000 residents, according to reports.

Notable among the structures damaged was a local hospital, St. John's Regional Medical Center, where several patients were injured as the twister tore part of the roof off and blew out several windows, Reuters reported.

Fatalities from tornadoes in Kansas and Minnesota were also reported on Saturday and Sunday.
