AIG's Benmosche being treated for cancer

NEW YORK—American International Group Inc. said Monday that President and CEO Robert H. Benmosche has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing “aggressive chemotherapy.”

AIG did not disclose what type of cancer Mr. Benmosche has.

Mr. Benmosche, 66, joined AIG in August 2009, succeeding Edward M. Liddy, who stepped down as chairman and CEO of the New York-based insurer after less than a year in the job.

Mr. Benmosche, who was MetLife Inc.’s chairman and CEO from 2000 to 2006, has been tasked with turning around AIG, the troubled insurer that suffered massive losses during the credit crisis and is working to repay a September 2008 government bailout.

“The good news is that I feel fine, and I continue to work according to my normal schedule,” Mr. Benmosche said in the AIG statement. “As for my long-term prognosis, I will have a better idea over the next couple of months of what that will look like as I continue to undergo treatment and my doctors refine their diagnosis.

“All that said, I remain absolutely committed to my job, to AIG and to all our stakeholders,” Mr. Benmosche said in the statement.
