Maryland insurance commissioner leaving for FDA job

BALTIMORE—Maryland Insurance Commissioner Ralph S. Tyler has resigned to become chief counsel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mr. Tyler, who submitted his resignation to Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley on Tuesday, has been Maryland's insurance commissioner since September 2007. His resignation is effective Jan. 8, 2010.

In a statement, Mr. Tyler said he will work with the governor before his departure to find a replacement to ensure a “smooth transition.” He then will assume his role as chief counsel to the FDA.
